Unforgettable Sights: Top Things to Do in Seattle

  1. Pike Place Market. A quintessential Seattle experience, Pike Place Market is an iconic destination that pulsates with energy, colors, and aromas. From the legendary flying fish thrown by skilled vendors to the breathtaking displays of fresh, vibrant flowers and an incredible array of food stalls, it’s a sensory feast. To truly savor the market without the overwhelming crowds, we highly recommend arriving early in the day, right as it opens. We visited twice – once in the bustling afternoon and again first thing in the morning. The difference was remarkable; the morning offered a more serene and enjoyable experience, allowing us to explore at our leisure. Don’t miss the opportunity to wander through its many levels, discover artisan crafts, and soak in the lively atmosphere. Specific food recommendations within the market will be detailed in our “Best Places to Eat” section below.

The journey itself across the sparkling waters of Puget Sound is a scenic delight, offering fresh air and stunning views. We chose to explore the magnificent Whidbey Island, a treasure trove of natural beauty and charm, managing to experience much of its offerings within a single day. Taking our rental van on the ferry proved to be both convenient and surprisingly reasonable, and our children absolutely adored the ferry ride experience.

If you visit, be sure to explore the serene Bloedel Reserve, a stunning 150-acre public garden and forest preserve. These islands offer timeless natural beauty, awe-inspiring greenery, and are world-renowned for their incredible whale watching opportunities, especially for spotting majestic orcas in their natural habitat.

4. Snoqualmie Falls. Just a short drive from Seattle, Snoqualmie Falls stands as one of Washington’s most popular and picturesque scenic destinations. The magnificent waterfall plunges 268 feet over granite cliffs, creating a truly awe-inspiring spectacle. There’s a relatively short 1.2-mile hike that leads down to the water, offering different perspectives of the falls, though direct access to the base is restricted for safety. The hike itself winds through beautiful wilderness, a refreshing journey through towering trees and lush greenery. At the top, picnic tables are available, making it an ideal spot to enjoy a meal amidst stunning natural surroundings. Our family, always up for an adventure, bravely ventured into the freezing cold water below (observing safety guidelines, of course!). They thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of navigating rocks and swimming in the invigorating currents, an experience that added a thrilling dimension to our visit.

You might find an abundance of luscious strawberries, sweet raspberries, tart huckleberries, or juicy blackberries. We ventured to Carnation, Washington, to pick berries at Remlinger Farms, a fantastic family-friendly destination. Harvold Berry Farms is another excellent option. Berry picking opportunities abound in the numerous small farming towns surrounding Seattle, and we even discovered delightful farms on Whidbey Island offering fresh produce.

Chism Beach Park, for instance, is beautifully situated on a gently sloping hill covered in verdant grass, framed by majestic pine trees and vibrant fresh flowers. The water, being fresh lake water, is wonderfully refreshing and often delightfully chilly. Visitors can spread out a blanket or beach towels on the soft grass, relax, and soak in the serene views of the lake. A highlight for our kids was the jumping platform located in the middle of the lake, from which they had an absolute blast leaping and catching balls, performing various jumps and tricks off the board. Even if swimming isn’t on your agenda, these parks provide a perfect, peaceful setting. Bring a blanket, a comfortable chair, and a good book to unwind, or pack a delicious picnic to enjoy amidst the tranquil surroundings, making for a truly relaxing escape.

Later in the summer, beautiful lavender festivals celebrate the fragrant purple fields. Even outside of specific festivals, you can always find fresh lavender goods, exquisite bouquets, and other floral delights straight from local farms at Seattle’s numerous farmer’s markets, adding a touch of natural beauty to your trip.
