A Fairytale Foodie Journey Through the French Riviera: Exploring Villefranche Sur-Mer, Monaco & Beyond
Bonjour, my dear friends, from the sun-drenched shores of the South of France! I’m currently experiencing a dream come true, staying in a charming Airbnb nestled within the picturesque village of Villefranche Sur-Mer. This place feels like it’s been plucked straight from the pages of a storybook, with every corner offering a breathtaking vista. I find myself constantly pinching myself, trying to confirm that this absolutely stunning reality is truly mine to experience.

This remarkable journey marks my second adventure to Europe, with my inaugural visit to Barcelona just last June. And let me tell you, I am utterly hooked! The allure of European travel, especially for a foodie like myself, is undeniable. I feel incredibly fortunate to be back, exploring this beautiful part of the world, and immensely thankful for the opportunity to embark on such an inspiring trip.

Prepare to feast your eyes, because I’ve updated this post with an abundance of captivating photos that truly capture the essence of our adventure. This entire trip felt like a fantastical fairytale, with France unfolding before us in the most dreamy and enchanting ways.

Imagine strolling through these exquisite alleyways in the South of France – it’s truly unreal! The iconic French blue shutters adorning ancient buildings, the tactile sensation of brick streets beneath your feet, the lush hydrangeas bursting with color, and the melodic chiming of church bells drifting through the air. Every detail contributed to an atmosphere of pure loveliness, a sensory symphony that will forever be etched in my memory.

A Culinary Deep Dive: French Riviera Food Tour Adventures
I’m traveling with a vibrant group of five fellow food blogger friends, and our mission, which we’ve embraced with gusto, is to eat and sample as much local cuisine as humanly possible. This isn’t just a vacation; it’s a dedicated research trip! As food enthusiasts, we understand the profound connection between culture and cuisine, and we’re committed to immersing ourselves fully in the flavors of the French Riviera.
Traveling and trying new foods has always been a wellspring of inspiration for me, and this trip is no exception. We’ve already embarked on some truly adventurous culinary quests, pushing our palates to new limits in our endeavor to truly understand the local gastronomic landscape.

The Unexpected Delights (and Surprises) of French Cuisine
On our very first day, we eagerly signed up for a comprehensive Nice food tour, and you wouldn’t believe some of the incredible, and sometimes surprising, things we tasted! Our guide, a true enthusiast of local gastronomy, was particularly excited to introduce us to a special cake or pie that is a beloved specialty of Nice, France. My anticipation soared, expecting something truly mind-blowing. As I took my first bite, she playfully asked, “Why do you think it’s green?” Any guesses?
It was Swiss chard! Yes, you read that right – Swiss chard in a dessert. This marked my first, and likely my last, encounter with a sweet treat featuring this leafy green vegetable. While it was an interesting experience, it certainly provided a memorable laugh!

Isn’t it fascinating how they create candied fruit here in France? The process, though seemingly simple, transforms fresh produce into exquisite, jewel-like confections. I’ve become utterly obsessed with their artistry.

Despite the unexpected Swiss chard dessert, the entire food tour was an absolute blast, reminding us of the sheer fun in being adventurous with food! Our knowledgeable guide led us through a diverse array of tastings: the savory chickpea socca, a local pancake-like specialty; a rich anchovy and onion focaccia; trouchia, a distinctive cold Swiss chard omelette; and a magnificent charcuterie board piled high with exquisite local meats and artisanal French cheeses, among many other delectable items.
It begs the question: how adventurous are you when it comes to trying new and unique foods during your travels?

The Sweet Pursuit: Macarons and French Chocolates
As soon as our official food tour concluded, I knew exactly where I was headed: a French macaron and chocolate shop, immediately! There’s something undeniably enchanting about these delicate pastries and rich confections.
Isn’t this macaron shop the most charming little place you’ve ever seen? Tucked away down a quaint alleyway, every detail, from the whimsical decor to the intricate flooring and, of course, the utterly delicious macarons themselves, exuded pure loveliness. It was a true feast for the eyes and the taste buds.

Later that day, we returned to our villa laden with six different desserts from a renowned French chocolate shop. Our objective? To meticulously test and analyze each one. I can definitively tell you, they were infinitely more appealing than the Swiss chard cake!

Exploring the Azure Coast: Eze and Monaco’s Grandeur
Our journey continued with an unforgettable excursion to the medieval hilltop village of Eze. From there, we ventured onward to the glamorous principality of Monaco, where we even caught a glimpse of the preparations for the iconic Grand Prix. And, as any true food blogger would, we managed to seek out and devour the most incredible gelato! This day alone saw us logging over 20,000 steps, testament to our enthusiastic exploration of these captivating cities.

Eze: A Medieval Gem with Exotic Views
The enchanting town of Eze felt as though we had been transported directly into the inspirational landscape behind Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast.” Its ancient stone pathways, breathtaking views, and rich history combine to create an unparalleled sense of beauty and charm. We took our time exploring the renowned Le Jardin Exotique, a magnificent garden perched high on a hill, offering spectacular panoramic views of the glistening Mediterranean Sea.

When I initially heard we were visiting a garden, my mind conjured images of vibrant floral displays and lush, verdant landscapes dotted with stately trees. To my delightful surprise, Le Jardin Exotique proved to be quite different – an “exotic garden” predominantly filled with an incredible variety of cacti and succulents. It felt almost like stepping into the Arizona desert, albeit with a spectacular ocean backdrop! It definitely evoked a sense of home, but with an unparalleled view. Have you ever experienced anything like it?

Alright, perhaps not *exactly* like Arizona. After all, we certainly don’t have oceanfront property quite like this!

Lunch in Eze was an equally memorable affair, enjoyed at a restaurant boasting absolutely breathtaking views overlooking the sparkling ocean. It was here that we had the pleasure of trying pizza topped with zucchini blossoms, a popular delicacy in this region of France. Have you ever had the chance to taste them? I can confirm, they were absolutely delicious!
Here’s a fun fact about me: I don’t drink alcohol, which means I’ve happily embraced the role of the “Mocktail Queen” on all our trips. This experience has fueled a new determination within me to create some truly killer mocktail recipes to share with you all!

Eze truly is a town straight out of a postcard, with its charming villas gracefully perched on hillsides, all gazing out over the expansive, azure sea.

Monaco: Glamour, Grand Prix, and Gourmet Gelato
On to our next grand adventure – a quick Uber ride took us directly to the illustrious Principality of Monaco! Did you know it consistently ranks among the most expensive places to live in the entire world? It’s also famously home to the Monaco Grand Prix, and it was incredibly cool to witness the elaborate setup for the race, which was happening soon.
Our exploration included a tour of the magnificent castle perched high on a hill, offering regal views of the city and harbor. One thing that consistently defines European exploration, particularly in these historic coastal towns, is the abundance of hills and stairs! My Apple Watch was undoubtedly thrilled with my activity levels in Europe. I believe we ascended a staggering 58 sets of stairs on this day alone. It felt like we were effortlessly burning off all the delicious pastries we’d been enjoying, right and left!

And what did we walk incredibly far for, you might ask? Any guesses? It was none other than the city’s top-rated gelato! As you can imagine, food bloggers will absolutely go out of their way for exceptional gelato, and this was no exception.
I simply had to indulge in three scoops because it was ridiculously amazing. My choices? A rich chocolate fudge pistachio, a creamy chocolate fudge hazelnut, and a delightful Amerena cherry gelato. I am still dreaming about every single spoonful!

After all that invigorating walking, we certainly worked up quite an appetite. Okay, let’s be real – we pretty much snacked constantly, driven by our desire to try every culinary delight Monaco had to offer!
For dinner, we had reservations at a truly gorgeous restaurant situated right on the beach in Monaco, offering stunning views and a perfect end to our day.

One ingredient that consistently appeared on almost every menu in this part of France was truffles. We encountered truffle eggs, truffle pasta, truffle mashed potatoes, and more. While I genuinely appreciate the delicate flavor of truffle, I must admit, I eventually needed a brief hiatus from it – it was truly everywhere! However, my absolute favorite truffle dish was undeniably the truffle pasta. It was absolutely delicious, rich, and unforgettable!

After this wonderfully relaxing dinner, we had to quickly make our way to catch a train back to Villefranche Sur-Mer, making it with a mere two minutes to spare – talk about a close call!
French Market Magic: Fresh Finds and Local Flavors
France is renowned for its incredible farmer’s markets, and we’ve had the pleasure of visiting one thus far, and it was utterly charming. The vibrant pink peonies on display were truly what dreams are made of – absolute perfection! We were so captivated that we returned to the Farmer’s market in Nice a second time because it was simply beautiful and brimming with so many treasures I longed to take home. Let’s just say, we don’t have farmer’s markets quite like this in Arizona!

From Peonies to Pastries: A Feast for the Senses
Can we just take a moment to appreciate the sheer beauty of these candied fruits? They are truly works of art, and I desperately wanted to try them all! Their vibrant colors and intricate details are mesmerizing.

Now, can you guess everything captured in the photo below? Let’s see if you can identify what’s in the bottom right corner! It’s something I had never tried before, and they were truly unreal. And what about the pasta dish? Any guesses? I absolutely adored this one!

The mystery items in the bottom right are Zucchini Flower Fritters, and they were phenomenal! We frequently encountered a trio of specialties in restaurants across France: creamy burrata, delicate zucchini flower fritters, and the ubiquitous truffle.

How about this intriguing dessert? Here’s a hint: my kids affectionately refer to it as the “styrofoam dessert.” Haha!

Riviera Relaxation and Culinary Camaraderie
We embarked on a delightful journey aboard the cutest shuttle ever, winding our way around the beautiful Saint Jean Cap Ferrat. Afterward, we decided to take a leisurely beach walk. What we anticipated as an easy stroll quickly evolved into an epic adventure: 10,000-plus steps and countless stairs later, we found ourselves questioning our choice of skirts and sandals! Sometimes my outfit selections don’t quite align with the day’s activities, but hey, I’m in France, and every moment is an experience!

These are my incredible food blogging friends, from whom I learn so much with every shared experience. From Left to Right, you have: Me :), Ashley from Recipe Rebel, Annie from Maebells, Katherine from Love in my Oven, Sarah from Live Eat Learn, and Marcie from Flavor the Moments. This culinary crew makes every trip an absolute joy and a learning experience.

Now, we’re back at the villa for the night – it’s Friday night here – and we’re currently indulging in what some affectionately call “girl dinner.” The French cheeses are simply divine: incredibly creamy and utterly decadent. I’ve been living off baguettes and cheese, generously slathered in rich French butter. It’s a simple pleasure, yet profoundly satisfying.

Sarah from Live Eat Learn effortlessly assembled this beautiful spread in mere minutes, a testament to her talent. I’m truly surrounded by such gifted individuals, and their passion for food is infectious.

Cannes: Film Festival Frenzy and Pastry Paradise
We still have two full days left of our incredible journey! Tomorrow, we’re off to explore Cannes and Antibes. The Cannes Film Festival is currently underway, so the city is bound to be buzzing with an electrifying energy. I absolutely can’t wait to discover even more markets and stock up on all the heavenly French butter. I’ll definitely be sharing photos of my epic haul with you!
I’ve added a ton more new photos above, and here are a few more to round out our trip. We ended up having an amazing time in Cannes, and the energy in the city was absolutely incredible. We even managed to snap a photo in front of the iconic red carpet – a true highlight!

Unsurprisingly, we basically ate our way through Cannes! Isn’t this yogurt bowl simply stunning? My personal quest was to find an amazing bakery, and keep scrolling, because we definitely found it!

Full disclosure: I wanted to order absolutely everything from this bakery! The French truly create the most beautiful and intricate desserts. What surprised me even more were the prices – almost everything was less expensive than similar items in some parts of the United States. Of course, that meant we had no choice but to try as many as possible!

Which one of these delectable creations would be your favorite?

For a relaxing evening, we enjoyed dinner at Dry Restaurant, right on the water in Villefranche Sur-Mer. Just look at how charming this town is, gracefully set along the coastline. We absolutely loved simply walking around, soaking in every beautiful detail. Oh, except for one minor detail: I made a rather poor shoe choice for navigating the famously hilly streets of Villefranche Sur-Mer. After that footwear debacle, I wholeheartedly embraced tennis shoes for the rest of the trip! Lesson learned, haha!

Cooking & Feasting at Our Charming Villa
Without a doubt, one of the absolute highlights of our trip was the joy of cooking together at our villa. On our very first night in France, we were all jet-lagged and utterly exhausted, so our sweet friend Annie, with her incredible generosity, made us a comforting dinner. I truly love her for that thoughtfulness!

The pasta we had in France was insanely good. I am still vividly dreaming about the rich flavors of this ravioli and the tender gnocchi. And those views from our villa? They never, ever, ever grew old; each moment felt like a postcard come to life.

Below, you’ll see a lovely photo of beautiful Ashley enjoying her lunch on the terrace on our last day. As much as I cherished exploring every nook and cranny of France, there was a unique comfort and joy in returning to our charming villa and simply relaxing, soaking in the serene atmosphere.

Oh, and I absolutely must include one last photo of a bakery, because they were truly everywhere! Stepping into one was like walking into my sweetest dream.

And let’s just chat for a second about this incredible crepe stuffed with Nutella, generously topped with creamy vanilla bean gelato and a drizzle of rich salted caramel. It was an absolute symphony of flavors and textures.

Embracing the French Lifestyle: Farewell Dinner and Lasting Memories
Our final dinner was celebrated at a stunning restaurant overlooking the shimmering water in Nice, France. It was such an incredible experience adventuring around France with my amazing foodie friends. They are all truly phenomenal, and I feel super grateful to have these kinds of opportunities to explore the world and its culinary wonders alongside them.

This entire journey, and indeed, my path as a food blogger, all started with a girl who was simply obsessed with learning how to cook and bake.
