The Unforeseen Diagnosis: A Journey of Resilience, Gratitude, and Renewed Purpose
I’ve always found solace in the quiet act of putting thoughts to paper, a practice that became an indispensable lifeline during the most challenging, emotionally charged, and anxiety-ridden weeks of my life. This story, one I never anticipated writing, is born from a deep-seated calling to share my experience. My profound hope is that it resonates with someone out there—perhaps empowering them to trust their intuition, encouraging them to seek early medical intervention, or simply reminding them they are not alone in their personal battles.
It’s been an astonishing five weeks since my world was irrevocably altered by a diagnosis of clear cell renal cell carcinoma, commonly known as kidney cancer. To say my life was turned upside down would be a profound understatement. The initial shock plunged me into a torrent of sleepless nights, each one heavy with fear and uncertainty. Yet, as I sit here now, slowly recuperating in the sanctuary of my own bed, an overwhelming sense of gratitude washes over me. My daughter has a beautiful term for this profound emotion: “gratitude tears.”
The Unwavering Strength of Human Connection
Through this arduous journey, I’ve been privileged to witness the absolute best in humanity. My incredible friends, my loving family, my cherished Modern Honey community, and even complete strangers have demonstrated an extraordinary capacity for kindness and support. The countless acts of love and selfless service have been a constant source of comfort and strength: home-cooked meals thoughtfully delivered to my doorstep, vibrant bouquets of flowers, carefully curated packages designed to make recovery more bearable, uplifting messages, and simple, heartfelt check-ins. Each gesture, no matter how small, has meant more to me than words can ever truly convey.
I’ve diligently read every single text, email, and direct message, often through a veil of tears. Your collective kindness has been a balm to my soul. It’s challenging to articulate the profound feeling of facing something utterly terrifying, yet never feeling truly alone. I felt enveloped by an immense wave of support and love. I will forever cherish the memory of those who showed up in my darkest days, reminding me that even the simplest text could illuminate my world. From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU.
Sharing this journey demands a vulnerability that feels both daunting and liberating. It’s a narrative replete with unexpected twists and turns, a whirlwind of events that unfolded in just five weeks, yet felt like an eternity. The speed and intensity of it all still leave me a little bewildered.
The Hamster Wheel: A Whisper Ignored
My journey began subtly, last year, when I found myself increasingly caught in the relentless grip of workaholism. What once was a lighthearted joke with my husband had morphed into an undeniable reality; I simply couldn’t dismount the metaphorical hamster wheel. There was always another task to complete, another problem to solve, another creative endeavor to pursue. My internal monologue was a constant refrain: “Just push through Q4. After December, I’ll slow down. I promise.”
But my body, in its wisdom, began to whisper a different narrative. Something felt fundamentally amiss. Having navigated autoimmune issues in the past, I’ve developed a keen awareness of my body’s signals. Yet, this particular sensation was distinct—a persistent, unsettling discord that I couldn’t ignore.
A New Year, One Singular Focus: Prioritizing Health
Historically, each New Year saw me meticulously crafting an extensive list of resolutions and goals. This year, however, a profound shift occurred. I streamlined my ambitions, setting one singular, overarching goal: to focus intently on my health. This meant finally scheduling those long-overdue doctor appointments and undergoing another round of blood work. That persistent “off” feeling demanded attention.
So, in January, I initiated the process by booking an appointment with an endocrinologist. As someone living with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, a routine check-up was certainly due. During that initial visit, a concerning discovery was made: the doctor palpated a large nodule on my thyroid. An ultrasound was promptly scheduled to gain a clearer, more detailed understanding of its nature and size. This appointment, seemingly routine, unknowingly marked the true beginning of a cascade of life-altering events.
When Everything Shifts: Persistent Headaches and Proactive Scans
Around the same pivotal time, I succumbed to pneumonia. While antibiotics addressed the infection, I was plagued by intense, persistent headaches that lingered for over six weeks. These weren’t my usual migraines; they were a distinct, deep, frontal, and unrelenting pain. Given my father’s history of strokes, I knew I couldn’t dismiss them. My intuition screamed that something more was at play.
It was then that I recalled hearing about a pioneering company called Prenuvo, which offered advanced full-body MRI scans. While I had previously undergone a localized MRI for a shoulder tumor, this was different—it promised to scan *everything*, providing an unprecedented comprehensive view of my internal landscape. Despite the significant out-of-pocket cost, as it wasn’t covered by insurance, an insistent inner voice urged me to proceed. It felt like an imperative.
For someone who experiences claustrophobia, enduring the full-body MRI was an intense mental and physical challenge. Lying still in that confined space for an extended period pushed my limits, but I persevered. I did it! Little did I know, this courageous decision would become the pivotal turning point in my health journey.
The very next day, the thyroid ultrasound I had scheduled previously took place. The nodule measured just shy of a kiwi’s size and was positioned precariously on my food pipe. Both its considerable size and its critical location raised immediate concerns, prompting my doctor to schedule a biopsy without delay. The stakes felt incredibly high: if the nodule proved malignant, surgery would be necessary to remove both the cancerous growth and my entire thyroid. Even if it were benign, an ablation procedure would still be required to burn away the nodule. The anxiety began to mount, a heavy blanket of dread settling over me.
The Phone Call That Changed Everything: Confronting Renal Cell Carcinoma
I had been informed that the MRI results would typically be delivered via email, unless something of urgent concern was discovered. “They’ll only call you if it’s serious,” I recall them saying. This caveat echoed in my mind, adding an undercurrent of apprehension to the waiting period.
Then, my phone rang. My heart plummeted the moment I saw the unfamiliar number on the caller ID, a chilling premonition of what was to come. The voice on the other end delivered the news with a gravity that instantly solidified my fears: “We found renal cell carcinoma.”
While the specific medical term was initially foreign to me, the word “carcinoma” immediately signaled something deeply wrong. The kind voice proceeded to explain that it was a type of kidney cancer. In that instant, it felt as though the entire world ground to a halt around me. I was in complete, utter shock. I numbly walked upstairs to tell Dean, my husband, the devastating news. Immediately afterwards, I instinctively opened my laptop, driven by a desperate need to find an oncologist. I called a renowned cancer center, and the moment I uttered the words, “I have renal cell carcinoma,” my voice cracked, and the tears, once held at bay by shock, came in a torrent.
That night, I believe I was in a state of profound denial, trying to reassure everyone I spoke with, even as my own world was crumbling. The hardest calls were undeniably to my children and my beloved Mom. Each conversation was brutal, filled with the agonizing attempt to convey a semblance of strength while my spirit was reeling.
Facing the Unseen: Cysts, Metastasis Scans, and Unwavering Hope
The oncologist, after reviewing my kidney scans online, immediately referred me to urology for surgical consultation. The urologist, upon examining the scans more closely, delivered even more unsettling news: undetermined cysts had also been identified on both my liver and pancreas. This added a new layer of complexity and fear to an already daunting situation.
A second MRI, this time with contrast, was swiftly scheduled to meticulously check for metastasis—the terrifying prospect of the cancer spreading to other organs or lymph nodes. The implication was stark: if it had spread to nearby organs, it would signify stage 4 cancer. I left the office under a sky that had opened up, rain falling—a rare occurrence for Arizona, mirroring the deluge of tears streaming down my face. I drove in silence, feeling stunned but surprisingly resolute. The questions gnawed at me: Was it confined solely to my kidney? Or had it infiltrated everywhere? What about my thyroid? The newly discovered cysts?
The unknowns were endless, the appointments ceaseless. Each day brought a new test, a fresh layer of anxiety. Despite the overwhelming circumstances, I fought tirelessly to stay positive, to pray fervently, and to hold onto hope for the best possible outcome, all while enduring the agonizing wait for those critical results.
Throughout this ordeal, whenever I spoke with my Mom, I could discern the profound worry in her voice. Her maternal instinct, as always, was to shoulder my burden, to fix it, to protect me from any harm. One day, recognizing her anguish, I told her, with a conviction that surprised even myself, “Mom, this isn’t breaking me; this is making me STRONGER. It’s building me. I am going to emerge from this a more resilient, stronger version of myself.”
I truly believed those words then, and I continue to believe them now. As painful and challenging as this journey has been, it has also sculpted me in ways I could never have anticipated. It has carved out deeper empathy and compassion, cultivated greater patience, solidified a stronger faith, instilled a more profound sense of positivity, and ignited a fierce, unyielding will to keep moving forward.
A Breath of Relief: No Metastasis and Benign Findings
Then, the MRI results came in. The words I desperately longed to hear: NO metastasis. NO lymph node activity. I sobbed, a raw, uncontrollable outpouring of relief. Anyone who has walked the terrifying path of a cancer diagnosis understands that pivotal moment—the agonizing wait to discover whether the cancer has spread. It was in that instant that I could finally, truly take a deep breath, allowing a fragile sense of peace to settle over me.
The report indicated that the tumor was “abutting” my pancreas, but crucially, it had not invaded it. This news brought another wave of profound gratitude. The radiologist further declared both the cysts—on my liver and pancreas—as benign. Each piece of good news felt like a monumental victory.
Good News Before Surgery: A Cleared Hurdle
Just two days before my scheduled kidney surgery, I received the much-anticipated results of my thyroid biopsy. My doctor, keenly aware of my heightened anxiety, walked into the room and immediately delivered the best possible news: “The results are benign!” He promptly handed me a box of tissues as I felt an overwhelming surge of relief wash over my heart. One more significant hurdle had been successfully cleared, lightening the immense emotional load I was carrying.
Now, my focus narrowed to fighting the singular, formidable battle ahead: kidney cancer, specifically clear cell renal cell carcinoma. And let me assure you, if there’s one defining characteristic about me, it’s an unwavering will to fight. I needed to fully comprehend the adversary I was facing so that I could climb that mountain with every ounce of strength and determination I possessed.
The Battle Ahead: Kidney Cancer Surgery
My surgery was scheduled as either a partial or radical nephrectomy—meaning the removal of part or all of my right kidney. The precise extent of the procedure wouldn’t be known until the surgeons were actually in. I had mentally prepared myself for the possibility of saying goodbye to an entire kidney, steeling myself for that outcome.
Hearing the inspiring stories of others who had not only survived but thrived with just one kidney offered an immense source of strength and hope. To everyone who shared their experiences, your courage helped me more than you could ever know. The preparation for surgery was a marathon of fasting and cleansing, days without food, but my resolve was unshaken. I was ready, both physically and mentally, to face what lay ahead.
A Miraculous Outcome: Part of the Kidney Saved
When I finally awoke from surgery, the first news I heard was nothing short of miraculous: the surgeons had successfully removed the cancerous mass and surrounding tissues, and incredibly, they were able to save a significant portion of my kidney. The margins were clear, a critical indicator of success. While I awaited the official pathology report and my follow-up with the surgeon later that week, the initial feedback conveyed a strong confidence that they had indeed removed all the cancer. This was truly the best-case scenario I could have hoped for, and I was, and remain, so incredibly grateful!
Post-Surgery Update and Ongoing Vigilance
*UPDATE: Driven by an impatient hope, I decided to check my patient portal, and sure enough, the pathology report was there. The official diagnosis confirmed CLEAR CELL RENAL CELL CARCINOMA, but with a profound relief, a suspicious lymph node also came back clear, as did all surrounding tissues. It truly felt like a miracle that this insidious disease was discovered when it was!
Following my visit with the surgeon, a meticulous plan for ongoing vigilance was established. He intends to closely monitor the cyst on my pancreas to ensure it doesn’t grow or change. This thorough and cautious approach means I’ll be undergoing regular MRI scans and chest X-rays every three months. These scans will not only keep a watchful eye on the pancreatic cyst but also on my remaining kidney. Upcoming appointments with my oncologist and gastroenterologist will further refine the next course of action. We continue to pray earnestly for consistently good news regarding my pancreas.
The Unexpected Turn in Recovery: A Test of Resilience
However, my recovery from surgery did not proceed as smoothly as hoped. I couldn’t stop vomiting, an relentless cycle with no end in sight. No food, no water, nothing stayed down. My intestines had completely shut down—a condition known as intestinal paralysis, or ileus. The medical team grew concerned that something might have twisted during the surgery, and preparations were made for further imaging tests.
The X-ray results eventually came in, and thankfully, no surgical complications were found. This brought a significant wave of relief, yet the underlying problem persisted: my digestive system remained stubbornly shut down. Each day brought a new attempt, a different strategy to kickstart my system, but nothing seemed to work. The frustration and discomfort were immense. And then…
The Power of Collective Support: Prayers and Healing
It was at this critical juncture that an overwhelming outpouring of prayers began. I had shared an update on Instagram about my extended hospital stay and the challenges I was facing. The response was immediate and immense; the love and collective concern that flooded back were truly overwhelming. Slowly, gradually, I began to improve. For the first time in five arduous days, I was finally allowed to consume food again. The corner had been turned. And then, at long last, I was sent home.
The Emotional Journey Home and the True Meaning of Support
Coming home was an incredibly emotional experience. I had made it through, against odds and unexpected setbacks. I had consciously tried to maintain a brave and positive demeanor throughout this entire ordeal. But in those quiet, solitary nights, alone in my hospital bed, that’s when the true fear would creep in. It was in those moments that your words of encouragement, your profound kindness, and your unwavering prayers truly carried me through the darkness.
Thank you. Thank you for simply being there. This entire experience has profoundly taught me the immense power of *showing up*. Even the smallest act—a simple text message, a brief drop-by, a quiet prayer—matters more than you could possibly imagine. These gestures were threads of comfort woven into the fabric of my darkest days.
A New Chapter: Living with Intention and Gratitude
I am still actively processing the entirety of this journey. The word “cancer” itself holds a chilling power, capable of stopping a heart with its mere utterance. Yet, if my story can inspire even one person to seek early medical checks or to wholeheartedly trust their gut instinct, then its purpose has been profoundly served.
I will slowly but surely begin posting new content on Modern Honey again. I have a backlog of exciting recipes eagerly waiting to be shared. My passion for what I do is unwavering, and I cannot wait to get back into my kitchen, to embrace the joy of cooking once more. I have missed it terribly.
For now, I am focusing on my recovery, resting in bed, my heart overflowing with love and an immense gratitude—for life itself, and for the precious gift of more time. I am more determined than ever to live each day with intention, to love ridiculously hard, and to never, ever take another single day for granted.
